We use QMRA to support health-protective decisions. QMRA takes microbial data as input and predicts risk, the probability of infection or illness, as output. The predicted risks can be compared to health benchmarks and/or used to set risk-based targets.

Mary Schoen is a Principal Scientist at Microbial Risk Analytics, LLC, specializing in water policy and human health risk assessment. Her work using QMRA has been highly influential, shaping the US EPA 2012 National Ambient Water Quality Criteria, Alternative Water Quality Criteria for Recreational Water and the US EPA 2025 Risk-Based Framework for Developing Microbial Treatment Targets for Water Reuse. Dr. Schoen's recent research focuses on analyzing antibiotic-resistant bacteria in recycled water and evaluating the sustainability of water systems by integrating cost, human health, and environmental factors.
